Morgan City Police Department says one suspect was taken into custody Friday morning as a result of a standoff that began Thursday night. Due to the vicinity of the incident, Dr. Teresa Bagwell said Maitland Elementary School will be closed on Friday.

Just after 9:00 p.m., MCPD was called to Leona Street in reference to a disturbance. Upon officers’ arrival, it was determined that a subject was barricaded in a house, possibly along with another subject.

MCPD then requested assistance from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, Berwick Police Department and the Louisiana State Police SWAT team.

Shortly after 4:00 a.m. Friday morning, the suspect was taken into custody. It was later determined that other subjects were in the home but they are safe.

MCPD will release further information on Friday morning, including the identity of the suspect.

Bagwell told KQKI News early Friday morning that because law enforcement personnel were using the parking lot of Maitland Elementary, and out of the abundance of caution, the school will be closed on Friday.
