A vessel towing five barges struck the railroad bridge that spans the Atchafalaya River between Berwick and Morgan City. The incident took place around 10 p.m. Sunday night resulting in Northbound and Southbound river traffic being closed while recovery efforts were underway to remove the barges from against the bridge. While we did not confirm whether or not the railroad bridge received damage, railroad traffic remained open during the recovery efforts and the river was reopened to traffic as of Monday afternoon. A spokeswoman with the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit in Morgan City told KQKI News that the vessel and barges were headed to Baton Rouge for repairs. You may watch video of the recovery efforts here.
