Memorial services celebrating the life of John Anthony Sonnier will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at Ibert’s Mortuary in Franklin. Fr. Peter Emusa, Pastor of St. Jules Catholic Church, will officiate the service. A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday at Ibert’s from 4:00 p.m. until service time.
John was born on Wednesday, September 21, 1960 in Franklin where he was a lifelong resident. He passed away at the age of 58 on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice in Lafayette. A loving husband, father, son, brother, and uncle, John was dedicated to his family and friends in countless ways. He spent his entire career in service of others in Law Enforcement, working ten years with the Franklin Police Department and then 20 years with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, retiring as a Detective in 2012. He was a dedicated supporter of Franklin Little League, Hanson softball, 4-H, and the St. Mary Parish Fair Association, of which he was honored with the 2019 Honorary Membership Award for his continuous support, dedication, and encouragement. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those he leaves to cherish his memory include his wife of 38 years, Rhonda Adams Sonnier; their children, Brittany S. Durham and her husband Elmer Ray Durham, and John Anthony Sonnier Jr.; his father, Irving Joseph Sonnier; five brothers, Danny, Dennis, Michael, Phillip, and David; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gary Adams Sr. and Barbara Adams; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elva Jane DesOrmeaux Sonnier; his paternal grandparents, Ogar Joseph Sonnier and Ida Broussard Sonnier; and his maternal grandparents, Huval DesOrmeaux and Esperie Richard DesOrmeaux.
