THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls State University community embraced the season of giving this fall. Together, the campus collected over 22,000 items during its annual food drive.

Nicholls CAN, which ran Nov. 5-15, collected 22,256 non-perishable food items. This is the second-highest total ever collected, topping last year’s collection of 20,492.

Volunteers send the items to food banks in Houma, Thibodaux, Raceland, Galliano and Dulac. The food banks distribute them throughout the holiday season.

More than 783,000 people in Louisiana struggle with hunger, according to a 2018 Loyola University study. Included in the figure are more than 258,000 children. That means one in six children live in households without consistent access to food.

Since 2012, Nicholls Can has collected and donated nearly 130,000 items.
