Preparing For High Water in Assumption Parish

Based upon the most recent information that we’ve received from the National Weather Service-River Prediction Center, the Atchafalaya River @ Morgan City is predicted to crest on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 7.5’. Last year, this same body of water reached approximately 7.3’ which would indicate that we will experience similar (to last year) water levels in the Lake Verret basin. Assumption Parish are in communication with the St. Mary Levee District and at this time the temporary structure at Bayou Chene that has been implemented in the past is not scheduled to be implemented during this high water event.

We strongly advise that all residents of Assumption parish who are affected by these high water levels take precautions now to prepare for the forecasted levels we may experience later this month.

The parish is currently preparing sand/sandbag sites at the following locations:
-Belle River Ballpark
-Pierre Part Bay Bridge (N Curtis @ LA-70)
-Lower Texas (@ Boat Launch)
-Bayou Crab Road (LA-400 @ LA-401)
(These sites will be self-serve… please bring a shovel to fill the provided bags.)
We will continue to provide information and updates as we await this high water event.
