Labadieville Man Arrested For DWI Later Dies in Cell in Assumption Parish

NAPOLEONVILLE – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the death of inmate Mr. Edward Murphy, Jr., 202 Sparrow Street, Labadieville, LA.

Mr. Murphy collapsed in his cell at approximately 6:25 a.m. on Sunday, February 04, 2018.
Correctional employees were steps away and noticed Mr. Murphy in distress.
Emergency protocol commenced. Correctional officers began CPR and dispatch contacted Acadian Ambulance who arrived at the facility a short time later.

Mr. Murphy was rushed to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center where he died at approximately 8:11 a.m.
Mr. Murphy was booked into the facility at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2018 by Louisiana State Police on charges of D.W.I., driving under suspension and expired motor vehicle inspection tag.
Mr. Murphy was being held in a temporary holding area and was housed alone.

The Sheriff’s Office made personal notification to Mr. Murphy’s next of kin at Thibodaux Regional.
As is protocol, a full review is underway but preliminary indication is that Mr. Murphy died as a result of an illness. Mr. Murphy had a documented history of cardiovascular disease.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
